Reading Together/SECONDARY

Engage struggling students. Imagine reaching the transition between middle school and high school without ever feeling connected in class, without ever feeling competent academically, without ever being recognized as having the potential to succeed?

Reading Together/SECONDARY provides supplemental instruction for these students with a way that builds self-esteem, instead of tearing it down. It is designed for middle- or high-school tutees who are perceived to be drop-out risks due to borderline skills, poverty or poor peer and family support. The emphasis is content-area reading, career exploration and college readiness; it takes students to the highest level of Bloom’s taxonomy, strategies for evaluation and synthesizing. Tutors are below-proficient upper middle or high school students who serve as role models for middle school students contemplating the transition to high school.

Lessons incorporate comprehension skills, writing, vocabulary and language instruction, career pathways and practice with life skills such as setting goals and making responsible decisions. Reading Together/SECONDARY is available as a 30-lesson program for extended days, or a 45-lesson program that may be used as an in-school elective.

Word of Mouth
I used to have to beg my students to participate in class. Now they're raising their hands to read aloud and answer questions.
